Lecture February 20th 2018

Double lecture with Dr. Sarah Buckley at Rigshospitalet

This double lecture is for midwives, doctors, childbirth educators, doulas, yoga teachers and other health-care proffesionals.

4:00 – 4:45pm
“Hormonal Physiology of Childbearing: Endogenous oxytocin systems in the perinatal period
Oxytocin has a pivotal role in reproduction. As well as its physical pro-contractile effects during labour, birth and breastfeeding, oxytocin also has powerful central effects, including analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidant for mother and baby. New understandings of oxytocin’s importance in psychological and physical wellbeing shed further light on its functioning in physiological labour and birth. Dr Sarah Buckley shares clinically relevant insights into the oxytocin system in childbearing from her report Hormonal Physiology of Childbearing and her current PhD studies.
4:45 – 5:00pm
Questions and short break
5:00 – 5:45pm
“The impact of maternity-care interventions on endogenous oxytocin systems for mother and baby”
What is the impact of perinatal drugs and procedures, including epidural analgesia and caesareans, on endogenous oxytocin systems of mothers and babies? How does synthetic oxytocin interact with oxytocin systems? Could perinatal oxytocin disruptions impact breastfeeding? Dr Buckley explores these topics, including strategies to fill the possible “hormonal gaps” based on her Hormonal Physiology of Childbearing report and current PhD studies.

Lecture and whole-day workshop Feb 20-21st 2018

Whole-Day workshop Feb 21st 2018

Hormonal Physiology in Childbearing

In this whole-day workshop, Dr Sarah Buckley presents her ground-breaking material from her 2015 report, Hormonal Physiology of Childbearing.

Learn about four important hormone systems active in labour and birth — oxytocin, beta-endorphins, adrenaline/noradrenaline and prolactin– and how they act to enhance ease, pleasure and safety for mother and baby.

Investigate the possible impacts of common maternity-care interventions on these delicate hormonal systems, incluidng the effects of induction, caesareans and epidurals, and the possible consequences for mothers and babies. Discover and discuss how to optimise hormonal physiology and fill the “hormonal gaps,” when interventions are required.

Enjoy the magic of the hour after birth, and discover how Mother Nature’s superb design continues after birth, optimising life-long health and wellbeing for mother and baby by optimising breastfeeding and attachment, including information about the process and benefits of the newborn placental transfusion.

Put this information into practice for youirself and your clients!

Sarah will be presenting her engaging PowerPoint material along with small-group activities and time for questions, discussion, and sharing. All of her material is based on the best available scientific evidence, as presented in Hormonal Physiology of Childbearing.

This workshop will be valuable for midwives, doulas, childbirth educators, and doctors, and other health care professionals, and will also be suitable for interested parents and parents-to-be.
